Connecting ChatGPT or Claude
Sorrel can be connected to an AI assistant, so you can ask it to save a recipe, find one you already have, put something on next Tuesday, or add a recipe's ingredients to the shopping. It works the same way in ChatGPT, in Claude, and in anything else that speaks MCP, because they all talk to one Sorrel server.
What you need
- Sorrel on your phone, with sync turned on — that is what gives you an account to connect to.
- Sorrel Pro. Connecting is free; using a connected assistant is part of the subscription.
- An assistant that supports custom connectors, such as ChatGPT or Claude.
How to connect
You start in the assistant, not in Sorrel. The address to give it is https://api.sorrelapp.io/mcp.
- In the assistant, add a connector and give it the address above.
- It will send you to a Sorrel page that lists what it is asking permission to do.
- On your phone, open Sorrel and go to Settings → Connect an assistant, then tap Get a code.
- Type that code into the Sorrel page. It lasts ten minutes and works once.
- Choose Connect. The assistant gets the permissions it listed, and nothing else.
Read the permissions before you agree to them. They are the whole of what the assistant will be able to do, and you can take them away at any time.
Things to ask for
Once it is connected, in your own words:
- “Save this recipe to Sorrel.”
- “Find my chicken tikka masala.”
- “Put that on the plan for Tuesday dinner.”
- “Add the ingredients to the shopping list.”
What a connected assistant can do
Only these, and only the ones you granted when you connected it:
- Search your recipes, and your household's
- Read one recipe in full
- Read a recipe out of text, without saving it
- Save a new recipe
- Change a recipe you already have
- Put a recipe on a day of your meal plan
- Add items to your grocery list
- See what is on your kitchen shelves
What it cannot do
- Delete anything. No connected assistant can remove a recipe, a meal or an item.
- Save a second copy of a recipe you already have without asking you first.
- Change a recipe without telling you exactly what it would change and waiting for a yes.
- See or remove your other connections, or your account itself.
Disconnecting
In Sorrel, Settings → Connect an assistant lists everything connected. Disconnecting takes effect immediately — the assistant loses access on its next request, not when something expires. Your recipes are not affected, and you can connect it again later.
What the assistant sees
Only what it asks for and you granted, and only when you ask it something. Sorrel does not send your library anywhere on its own. Everything an assistant does is done as you, on your own account, and needs your subscription to be live at that moment — a lapsed subscription stops a connection working without you having to remove it. If something does not work
- The code was refused. Codes last ten minutes and work once — get a fresh one and try again.
- The assistant says you need Sorrel Pro. Connecting is free, but using a connection needs a live subscription. About Sorrel Pro
- It cannot find your recipes. Sync has to be on, and the phone has to have synced at least once, before there is anything for an assistant to read.
